The Vietnam War photo “Napalm Girl” made Vietnamese photojournalist Nick Ut famous and won him a Pulitzer Prize.
He is the first Vietnamese-born person to win the prestigious journalism award, and the only Vietnamese-born person to win a Pulitzer Prize.
“Nick Ut was the chosen one,” said a Vietnamese photojournalist who asked not to be named. Nick Ut, affectionately known as “Teacher,” often returns to his home country to train and mentor fellow Vietnamese photojournalists.
But 50 years after the photo was released, a documentary called The Stringer has challenged the authenticity of the photo. It premiered at the Sudan Film Festival in January.
The documentary claims that the real photographer was Nguyen Thanh Nghe, now 87, a freelance photojournalist. This is a shocking claim.
